disrupt a horse’s internal fluid balances. The average 1,000 pound horse is made up of roughly 70 gallons of water, which accounts for about two-thirds of his body weight, and none of that is pure or ‘fresh’ water. About two-thirds of the water in a horse’s body is contained within cells (intracellular), ten percent fills the gaps between cells (interstitial fluid), and the rest is found in the blood plasma and transcellular fluids.
Electrolytes are important in the function of almost all tissues. The currents they conduct are crucial power sources for a long list of tasks, including contracting and relaxing muscle cells, regulating kidney function, controlling the heartbeat and transmitting nerve impulses.
When a horse exercises, fluid from his blood passes through special glands in the skin as cooling sweat. The result is an imbalance of fluid from the gut and the interstitial spaces. If the horse keeps working without the fluid being replenished, the cells will eventually give up their fluid with potentially dangerous consequences. Horses that sweat too long and too heavily without replenishment of fluids and nutrients can develop a variety of disorders, stemming from the loss of too many valuable fluids and electrolytes. The loss of too much fluid from the gut can cause impaction colic. Synchronous diaphragmatic flutter ("thumps") and exertional rhabdomyolysis ("tying up") both result from disruptions of calcium, an electrolyte that regulates the contraction and relaxation of muscle cells. With too much loss of fluid, the horse loses his capacity to sweat (anhidrosis), leading to the potential for heatstroke.
As detailed above, the horse's electrolyte system is extremely important, yet most horses get all they need from their feed and mineralized salt block.
